On the site consecrated by the Primate of the Russian Church, where the construction of the cathedral was previously planned, an Orthodox spiritual and sports center will be erected instead of the latter. This was reported by the Nord-News news agency.
Metropolitan Mitrofan of Murmansk and Monchegorsk spoke about the changes in construction plans at a press conference. In Russia, the spiritual and sports center will be the first of its kind, the ruling bishop noted, and the main coordinator of this project will be the rector of the nearby Church of the Savior on the Waters, Archpriest Andrei Amelin. Where previously it was planned to locate the conference hall of the future cathedral, sports halls will now be erected. “Over the past ten years, the Orthodox Church has been expanding to face society. Therefore, all areas of public life are in the attention of the church today, ”Vladyka Mitrofan said. The ruling bishop of the Murmansk Metropolitanate heads the work of the Patriarch's Commission on Physical Culture and Sports and is convinced that the spiritual guidance of athletes is very important in the matter of physical self-improvement. As Archpriest Andrei Amelin noted, there are many athletes and professional coaches among the parishioners of the Church of the Savior on the Waters who have already expressed their readiness to engage with young people, teaching them various types of martial arts and other sports. The new spiritual and sports center will be named Preobrazhensky. In his Norilsk Nickel will take part in the construction - an agreement on this has already been reached between the Church and the management of the enterprise.
