'Smart' machine filigree carves icons from wood

«Умный» станок филигранно вырезает иконы из дерева
At the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Siberian city of Bratsk, modern technologies came to the aid of icon painters. An intelligent machine delicately carves holy images from wood, conveying the most subtle nuances of pre-programmed images. The latter are painstakingly created by artists in a special program. Then, through the control panel, a command is given to the milling cutter - and she embodies them in the tree.

According to the BST portal, the intelligent machine was purchased in the city of Usolye-Sibirskoye and delivered to Bratsk by special transport. It took a lot of time for parish craftsmen to get acquainted with the capabilities of the machine and to master it. Today, icon painters have created many models of different icons, which one after another take on life thanks to a smart machine.
Pine is mainly used as a working material. “It's convenient to work with her. It does not splinter. Tried on other breeds. The most successful is a pine tree. Unfortunately, we do not have breeds with which they work in the European part. Beech, for example, is quite malleable in such work, ”says Father Nikolai Osipov, rector of the Holy Dormition parish.
On average, it takes three to four days to make one icon. After the machine has cut the image, it covered with stain, and after a while - with gold or silver patina. This part of the work is done by icon painters by hand, just like two or five hundred years ago: with prayer, after special preparation for working with the holy image. All icons made in this way fully comply with church canons.
At the Holy Dormition parish, it is believed that it is not the material itself and the method of processing that are important, but love and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, without which the creation of a genuine icon is impossible even for the most skillful master. In addition, wooden icons have one big plus: they can be touched, which is very important for blind and visually impaired people who come to church to pray to the Lord God and His saints.
Wooden icons, images for which were carved with a 'smart' machine, will soon be seen not only in the interior of the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Bratsk. Abbots of churches under construction in the urban area of South Padun and the village of Koblyakovo, where the installation of wooden iconostases is envisaged, have already become interested in the possibilities of the new technology.
