To these thoughts John replied that he baptizes with water to repentance ( 11 I baptize you in water to repentance, but He who follows me is stronger than me; I am not worthy to bear His shoes; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire; Matthew 3:11 ), i.e. as a sign of repentance, but the Strongest follows him, Whom he is not worthy to untie ( 7 And he preached, saying: The Strongest of me follows me, from Whom I am not worthy to bend over to untie the belt of his shoes; Mk. 1: 7) or carry shoes, as servants do to their master. “You baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire” - in His baptism the grace of the Holy Spirit will act, burning like fire, all sinful filth.
