Interpretation of the Holy Gospel February 16

Толкование Святого Евангелия 16 февраля
From Mark . 12: 18-27

Then the Sadducees came to Him, who say that there is no resurrection, and asked Him, saying:
Teacher! Moses wrote to us: if someone's brother dies and leaves his wife, but does not leave children, then let his brother take his wife and restore the seed to his brother.
There were seven brothers: the first took a wife and, dying, left no children.
The second took her and died, and he left no children; also the third.
Seven took her for themselves and left no children. After all, his wife also died.
So, in the resurrection, when they are resurrected, which of them will she wife? For the seven had her as a wife?
Jesus answered and said to them: Are you by this led astray, not knowing the Scriptures or the power of God?
For when they rise from the dead, then they will neither marry nor be given in marriage, but they will be like the Angels in heaven.
And about the dead, that they will rise again, did you not read in the book of Moses, how God said to him at the bush: I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
God is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. So you are very much mistaken.

Interpretation of a group of verses: Mark: 12: 24-27

First, Jesus points out that “eternal life” has its own laws. Therefore, from the Bible, which gives commandments for modern life in
our world, we cannot draw conclusions for the future life. The Sadducees were deluded, imagining heaven by analogy with earth. People have always done this. The hunting tribes envisioned eternal life in heaven as a fertile hunting ground. Some Vikings, who were brave warriors, imagined the afterlife as Valhalla, where they could fight all day long and enjoy feasts in the evenings, drinking wine from cups made from the skulls of defeated enemies. Bedouin Muslim nomads envisioned heaven as a place where life is full of carnal pleasures. The Jews feared and hated the sea, and therefore imagined heaven to be a place where there would be no sea at all. People have always imagined heaven the way they wanted. But we must not forget the words of the Apostle Paul: 'He did not see that eye, the ear did not hear that, and that did not come into the heart of man, which God has prepared for those who love Him' (9 God is faithful, by whom you are called into the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Cor. 1: 9). And now Jesus Christ touches upon, so to speak, one of the principles of the resurrection. He declares that after the resurrection the old physical laws will no longer be valid. 'For when they rise from the dead, then they will neither marry nor be given in marriage, but they will be like the angels in heaven.' The resurrected are like angels, and physical problems such as marriage and marriage will have nothing to do with them at all. The life to come cannot be thought of in terms of the present life. And I must say, these questions were raised in the Jewish apocalyptic literature of that time. So, in the Book of Enoch there is a promise: 'You will have great joy, as to the angels of heaven.' In the Apocalypse from Baruch it is said that the righteous will become 'like angels', and in the writings of the rabbis it was said that in the future life 'there is no food, drink, childbirth, business relations, jealousy, hatred and quarrels, but the righteous will sit with crowns on the head in the glory of God. '

Second, Jesus touches on the very fact of eternal life and resurrection. According to Jesus, the Sadducees are deluded, 'not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.' They do not believe that God has the power to create life out of death and to accomplish something that is impossible to imagine. This is because they do not know well and do not understand the text of Scripture, the very Pentateuch of Moses, which they put above everything else 1! Next, Jesus takes His proof in the Pentateuch, which the Sadducees so highly valued and claimed that there was no evidence of immortality in it. What are they wrong about? The point is this - and this is usually overlooked in popular interpretations of the Gospel. One who sticks to
only the letters of the Biblical text, he is unlikely to notice that Jesus Christ, quoting the words from the book of Exodus, 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob' (6 And he said [to him]: I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Moses covered his face because he was afraid to look at God. Ex. 3: 6), recalls that these words were spoken by God to Moses at the bush. It was then that God revealed to Moses His great Name “I Am that I Am” (as in the Greek and Russian translations). Without going into the details of the discussion of the meaning of the Name of God, here it is enough for us to point out that God in him expresses the idea of His eternal existence. “I am”, or “I am who I am” can be conveyed in other words: “I am eternal”, “I exist forever”. And further: whoever remembers this, and also remembers how steadfastly God remained faithful to His people, and how often He saved the people and individuals from the power of death - he, of course, can hear in this word of the Book of Exodus more than he says its letter. And then he will understand that behind the words “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob” is the thought: “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, I was and remain so now! And that is why Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are not departed personalities! They are still the essence. They live even today, because I am their God, I am forever! ' In other words, if God is still the God of the patriarchs now, then this means that they and should still be alive now. And if the patriarchs are alive, then the fact of the resurrection is proved. Any interpretation of Scripture - no matter how accurately it adheres to the letter - is a delusion, if it, this interpretation, ignores the faithfulness of God (in Scripture it is called 'the truth of God'); it is deluded if it ignores the life-giving power of God. For the God who says in the Scriptures that He is, “is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living” (Mark 12:27).
