From Mark . 11: 27–33
They came back to Jerusalem. And as He walked in the temple, the chief priests and scribes and elders came up to Him.
and they said to him, By what authority do you do this? and who gave you the authority to do this?
Jesus answered them: I will also ask you one thing, answer Me; then I will also tell you by what authority I do this.
Was the baptism of John from heaven, or from men? answer me.
They reasoned among themselves: if we say: from heaven, then He will say: why did you not believe him?
but to say: from men - they were afraid of the people, because everyone believed that John was definitely a prophet.
And they answered Jesus: We do not know. Then Jesus answered and said to them: I will not tell you by what authority I do this.

Interpretation of a group of verses: Mark: 11: 28-28
The procession of the Sanhedrin to the temple, where Jesus was already present, attracted many people. The members of the Supreme Council entered the temple and immediately began interrogating: “Tell us, by what authority are you doing this?
Who gave you the right to solemnly enter Jerusalem, to accept the name of the Son of David from the people, to drive out the merchants from the temple and to perform healings? Who gave you this power? '
If the members of the Sanhedrin impartially examined everything known to them about Jesus (and they knew everything, since they constantly watched Him), they would have known long ago what authority Jesus acts, would have long recognized Him as the Messiah.
But they did not possess such impartiality. Trembling for their power over the people and for the benefits associated with it, they were ready to kill anyone, even the Messiah, who only threatened them with the loss of this power.
