The Russian Orthodox Church is against the translation of services from Church Slavonic into Russian

The Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church does not support the idea of transferring services from Church Slavonic to Russian, ostensibly to attract people to churches and to better understand the meaning of the service. This tendency was discussed in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior during the meeting of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill with the clergy ordained by him.

One of the participants in the meeting, priest Roman Bagdasarov, told the RIA Novosti correspondent: “The question was raised about how best to convey the wealth of Sacred Tradition and the wealth of liturgical and liturgical texts to a modern person“ in a more understandable form, ”this was the question. And here His Holiness Patriarch emphasized that the age-old process of development of our liturgical charter does not require additional interventions or special modernization. On the contrary, if we stay in line, in the general direction of the spiritual life of our church, then we will begin to understand much more than if we began to adapt some texts. '

The idea of translating the liturgy and rites of other divine services from Church Slavonic into Russian is also not good because over the centuries a whole a series of turns, tenses and phonetic moments. For example, the rector of the Epiphany Cathedral of the capital, Archpriest Alexander Ageikin, specified that a special form of the past tense - aorist - simply has no analogue in modern Russian and, accordingly, cannot be adequately translated into it. The Church Slavonic language, he added, is not frozen - just as the language of worship it has been perfected over the centuries, and it must be treated with wisdom and reverence.
