The Russian Orthodox Church prepares regulations for the expulsion of demons

The Theology Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church has prepared a document regulating the practice of exorcism (casting out demons). This is reported by RIA Novosti, citing the words of the head of the department for external church relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion. Vladyka Hilarion emphasized that he could not disclose the contents of the document before its official publication. But he noted that the prepared document contains both the history of this practice and proposals for its unification and regulation.

The practical side of the ritual of casting out demons has been discussed in the Church for more than a day. From the point of view of the Church, parents do not have the right to engage in casting out demons from their children and from anyone in general. In the Church there is such a practice, it is called exorcism, in common parlance - a lecture, when a demon-possessed person is brought to the priest and he reads special prayers for casting out demons.

In August 2020, Archimandrite German, a resident of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, died of coronavirus. The media wrote that he was the only priest in Russia who was officially allowed by the Russian Orthodox Church to conduct exorcisms. At the end of 2020, Hilarion, on behalf of the Russian Orthodox Church, asked the faithful not to carry out the rituals of exorcism on their own, emphasizing that this can only be done by a special priest with the special blessing of the bishop. He also noted that it should not be confused with the frenzy of suspicion of a person's possible mental disorders.
