The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, walked part of the way together with the participants of the procession, which twice a year follows the path of St. Nina (Nino), the enlightener of Georgia. The procession, which began on June 1, the day of the saint's coming to the Iberian land (now eastern Georgia), will continue for six weeks; his route exactly repeats the path once made by Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina, one of the heavenly patrons of the country.
As reported by the Sputnik-Georgia news agency, Salome Zurabishvili joined the procession at the Foki Monastery near Lake Paravani in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region and walked along with the believers for several hours, traditionally carrying a grapevine cross in her hands. Together with her, the Prime Minister of Georgia Mamuka Bakhtadze and members of the Cabinet of Ministers traveled part of the way. According to Holy Tradition, the Mother of God appeared in a dream to the niece of Patriarch Juvenaly and commanded her to bring the light of Christianity to the Iberian land - which she did. Having overcome a path full of dangers, more than once by the grace of God escaping death, Saint Nina came to Iberia in 319 and began to diligently study the language and customs of the country. Having loved the locals with all her heart, the saint instructed them in the Christian doctrine, reinforcing the word of Scripture with the example of her righteous life and many signs that the Lord worked through her. On the day of the holiday in memory of the enlightener of Georgia, President of the country Salome Zurabishvili addressed the believers with words of congratulations. “May Saint Nino protect all Georgia and each of us. This is the most important day. One thousand seven hundred years ago, Nino came to Georgia, and after that Georgia united and adopted Christianity. This grace is with us to this day. May Her Grace protect you, ”she said.
