Orthodox Christians celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord or 'Apple Savior'

Православные христиане празднуют Преображение Господне или «Яблочный Спас»
On August 19, Orthodox believers celebrate the Great holiday - the Transfiguration of the Lord. The celebration was established in the remembrance of the events that the three Gospels speak of at once: Luke, Mark and Matthew. Having gone to Galilee, the Savior with three disciples - Peter, James and John - ascended Mount Tabor. During the prayer at its top, the Son of God was transformed: His face became like the sun, and His clothes - white like snow. After that, a cloud fell on the disciples and they heard a Voice: 'This is My beloved Son, listen to Him.' The shocked apostles fell down, but the Lord Jesus Christ raised them up and forbade them to tell about what they had seen until the day of His Resurrection. It is generally accepted that, having been transformed, the Savior showed his disciples what kind of people who will be rewarded with the Kingdom of Heaven will be in Eternal Life.

There is another tradition on Mount Athos. In the evening on the eve of the Transfiguration, pilgrims climb the highest of the peaks of Mount Athos, located at 2033 meters above sea level. In the paraklis located here - the church consecrated in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the service goes all night, which ends with the Divine Liturgy in the morning. After its completion, all those who prayed together descend 500 meters lower, to the Panagia Church, where the festive table has already been laid for them by the monks of the Great Lavra. Despite border closures and other restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic, many pilgrims prayed for the liturgy at the summit Athos and took part in the festive meal this year as well.
