The arsonist was a 49-year-old resident of Jerusalem. Entering the temple, he poured a flammable substance from a bottle on the floor and brought fire to it. The liquid burst into flames instantly. Sensing the pungent smoke, the church guard immediately called the fire brigade and the police, and then twisted the intruder and held him until the police arrived.
Four fire brigades promptly arrived at the scene. Having discovered the source of the ignition, they extinguished the flame, which, by the grace of the Lord God, did not have time to spread: only two adjacent benches for parishioners were partially burned.
