Remains of a temple from the times of Ivan the Terrible discovered near St. Petersburg

Под Петербургом обнаружили остатки храма времён Ивана Грозного

In the Konigsepp district of the Leningrad region, on the territory of the former estate Novopyatnitskoye, researchers from the Institute for the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) have discovered the foundation of a sixteenth-century temple. The find was reported by the Internet newspaper 'Neva Segodnya'. Apparently, the temple was located on the territory of the Pyatnitsky monastery that operated on this site in the old days.

Archaeological research in this place has been completed to this day. Now the researchers have to reconstruct the appearance of the old church on the basis of the preserved apses, base pillars and part of the northern wall. This is not an easy task, but, given the modern technologies available to scientists, it can be done.

In addition to the remains of the church, archaeologists also discovered Orthodox pectoral crosses, seventeenth-century Swedish coins, buttons and other household items.
