Vatican Guard recruits sworn in

On October 4, 38 new members of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, wearing a festive Grand Gala uniform that includes armor, were sworn in. This year's ceremony, which begins with a general prayer and usually attracts many guests at Cortile San Damaso, was held behind closed doors. However, everyone could watch it thanks to the live broadcast organized by the Vatican.

The date of the oath, as the website 'Italy pro-Russian' clarifies, has also been changed in connection with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The ceremony usually takes place on May 6th. On this day, the recruits, laying their left hand on the flag of the city-state and holding their right hand raised with three open fingers (which symbolizes the Lord God - the Holy Trinity), swear allegiance to the Pontiff.

The date of May 6 is associated with the events of 1527, when Rome was set on fire and plundered by German mercenaries. The Swiss guards managed to save the pope Clement VII Medici, throwing a dark cloak over his white robes and escorting the head of the Roman Catholic Church from the Apostolic Palace through the Passetto di Borgo to the castle of Sant'Angelo. The selfless Swiss paid a high price for the success of this venture: out of 189 guardsmen, only 42 survived.
Today, the Pontifical Swiss Guard is the only military force at the disposal of the Vatican, serving the Holy See since January 1506.
