On October 13, the day preceding the Great Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, the historic Holy Intercession Church was consecrated in the armory capital of Russia. The rite of the great consecration of the temple was performed by Metropolitan Alexy of Tula and Ephraim. The ruling bishop consecrated the main altar in honor of the Protection of the Mother of God and two side altar in the name of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Martyr Paraskeva Friday. Обновлённый Свято-Покровский храм в Музейном квартале Тулы The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos with the associated chapel is located in the Museum Quarter of Tula and is considered an architectural monument of the 18th century. This is both true and not true. The Pokrovsky parish was first mentioned in written sources in 1567 - even then it was a stone church with two side chapels and a refectory. However, over time, the temple ceased to accommodate everyone who gathered in it for common prayer. In addition, lightning struck its middle tent in 1768, severely damaging the vaults. As a result of the reconstruction, which lasted more than twenty years, the former house of prayer was actually dismantled - and a new temple was built on its foundation. It operated until 1933, after which it was closed by order of the godless government. Only in 2009 both the temple and the chapel was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. Until 2018, a large-scale restoration took place here. The work was carried out under the supervision of the rector of the Holy Protection Parish of Tula, Archpriest Lev Makhno, one of the oldest and honored clergy in the state of the diocese. Now the historic Pokrovsky Church, re-consecrated with a great rite, will regularly gather the faithful of Tula for common prayer. Photo: 'Tula Press'
