On January 19, Orthodox believers will celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, which in the church tradition is otherwise called the Epiphany. In the northern capital of Russia, where the weather, as well as in most of the country this January is warmer than usual, and there is no strong ice, instead of ice holes traditional for the local latitudes, this time they will equip fonts. In total, twenty-seven of them will be equipped in different districts of St. Petersburg.

Although it is not at all necessary to swim in water sources for Epiphany, this tradition has existed in Russia for centuries.

- The very ablution or immersion in the baptismal font is not a church tradition, but a folk rite. He came from the Holy Land: it is warm there even in January, you can dive into the Jordan. In our Russian tradition, especially in the northern regions of the country, this is more of a demonstration of fortitude than a church practice, ”said St. Petersburg priest Bogdan Polevoy, rector of the Sorrow Church, in response to a question from a Metro newspaper reporter.

The main Jordan of St. Petersburg will be located on the beach of the Peter and Paul Fortress. Warm tents will be set up next to it. Here, artists will perform with a festive program, outdoor games are organized. An innovation of Epiphany-2020 will be a barrel with heated water - it will be installed on the banks of the Neva for those who are not yet ready to dive into the cold waters of the river.
