Orthodox church to be built on an island in the Barents Sea
5 July 2019
The North Sea diocese has decided to build an Orthodox church on the Kildin Island in the Barents Sea, separated from the mainland by a one and a half kilometer wide strait. A year ago, a veneration cross was erected and consecrated on the island, and on the third of July of this year, the foundation of a temple was laid in the name of the holy righteous warrior Theodore Ushakov, an outstanding Russian naval commander. The rite of consecration of the foundation stone in the foundation of the future church was performed by Bishop Tarasiy of Severomorsk and Umbsk.
Thus, the Orthodox history of the island, located at the entrance to the Kola Bay, gets its continuation. In the Bay of Mogilnaya (earlier it was called Monastyrskaya), where a cross is installed and a temple will be built, it is also planned to build a spiritual and educational health center. The preparatory work preceding the construction of the temple and the buildings of the center has already begun.
