Establishing a single day for the celebration of Easter would be a blessing for all Christians, both Orthodox and Catholics. This statement was made by the representative of the Moscow Patriarchate, Hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov).
According to the clergy, the plan can be realized by following the decisions of the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, which took place in 325. It was there that, more than one and a half thousand years ago, the decision was made to celebrate Easter on one day, and the Orthodox Church is steadily following this decision. However, after the division of the Church in 1054 into Western (Roman Catholic) and Eastern (Orthodox), the situation changed.
- The return of all Christian churches to uniformity in the date of the celebration of Easter would be a great blessing for the Christian world. However, it is possible only on those foundations that were determined by the First Ecumenical Council. - said Hieromonk Stephen.
Earlier, the head of the representation of the Patriarchate of Constantinople to the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Archbishop Job of Thelmes, spoke in favor of calendar reform in the Orthodox world in order to establish a common date for the celebration of Easter with Catholics.
