Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, who is responsible, among other things, for the most important dialogue between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches, visited Portugal, where he visited Fatima and Lisbon.
The first place where His Eminence Vladyka went was Fatima - the place where the Most Holy Theotokos appeared a century ago. For Metropolitan Hilarion, who has already been to Portugal, this is his first visit to Fatima; according to him, he himself wished to visit this 'place of rest', about which he had read a lot - the very place where the Ever-Virgin appeared to the children. Metropolitan Hilarion prayed in silence at the Chapel of Apparitions, and also lit a candle, as numerous pilgrims do here. Bishop Antonio Marto of Leiria-Fatima, who accompanied the Metropolitan during his visit, presented His Eminence Hilarion with a medallion minted in 2017 in memory of the centenary of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fatima - as well as the Russian-language edition of 'Memoirs of Mother Lucia'. This book about the miraculous Phenomena in Fatima was written by one of the witnesses of those very events. On the second day of his visit to Portugal, Metropolitan Hilarion visited the capital of the country, Lisbon, where he made a report on the topic 'The Russian Orthodox Church and aid to Christians in the Middle East.'
