The construction of the temple, which looks like a flagship, is underway in the north-west of the Russian capital, Interfax reports. It is erected on Lodochnaya Street in Tushino; by the end of this year, construction should be completed. Roofing works are already underway, finishing of facades has begun. In general, the construction process should be completed in autumn. The new church will be consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia. Nikolai the Pleasant, as this saint is traditionally called in Russia, is revered by believers as the patron saint of sailors and all workers of the sea and river fleet. The life of Saint Nicholas preserves the testimonies of how he walked on the waters and calmed the stormy waters of the sea, thus saving the crews of ships. Temples in the form of a ship - that is, an elongated quadrangle with a protruding front part - have been known since the times of the Apostles. This form of the building symbolized a strong ark for the salvation of the soul in the sea of everyday storms. In Russia, ship-shaped temples are also the most widespread. And in ancient Rome, during the persecution of Christians, another recognizable sea symbol - the anchor - masked the sign of the cross on buildings in which adherents of the faith of Christ gathered secretly for joint prayer.
