Located in Macintosh County, near the picturesque coast of the Atlantic Ocean, Christ Chapel is considered the smallest church not only in the United States, but also in the Western Hemisphere in general. It is located very close to the longest highway in the country, I-95, which runs from north to south along the east coast. For this reason, thousands of travelers and tourists pass by the Cathedral of Christ every year - and many of them drop by a miniature church in southeastern Georgia to get away from the hustle and bustle of life, collect their thoughts and offer prayer to the Lord. Actually, the temple was originally conceived as a kind of shelter for travelers. Local grocer Agnes Harper was the author of the idea and initiator of the construction. In 1949, her plan was finally realized. The building with an area of 17.65 square meters was decorated with stunningly beautiful stained glass windows specially ordered in England and brought across the ocean. The temple, not counting the priest, could simultaneously accommodate from 12 to 15 people, depending on the build. The new temple was consecrated in the name of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, the tiny church has attracted the attention of more than one tourists and worshipers. In November 2015, unknown vandals set fire to the temple, and a significant part of the building burned down. Be that as it may, local Christian communities the idea of restoring a unique church united different denominations. Using the building and finishing materials collected as donations, the volunteers got down to business - and in a year and a half they restored the Cathedral of Christ. The church was rededicated a week before Easter 2017. Today, services in the Cathedral of Christ are held on Sundays every three weeks. The lawn in front of the temple is decorated with sculptures depicting the Savior with children, as well as other subjects that are understandable to every Christian. For those who come to the temple by car, there is free parking nearby. V. Sergienko
