The British Library will show the oldest book in Europe - the Cuthbert Gospel

Британская библиотека покажет самую старую книгу в Европе — Катбертово евангелие
The oldest book in Europe will soon be on display as part of an exhibition that the British Library in London is preparing for the opening, according to The Vintage News.

This so-called Gospel of St. Cuthbert or Cuthbert's Gospel is a list of the gospel from St. John, who is more than 1300 years old. The British Library acquired the unique artifact in 2012 for £ 9 million. A handwritten book of rather miniature size, hardback in red leather dates from AD 698. The list of the Gospel of John in Latin was hand-made by monks in the north-east of England and placed in the coffin of St. Cuthbert. Fearing Viking raids, the monastic community left the island of Lindisfarne, taking with them the coffin with the relics of the revered saint, thus preserving the book. The brothers settled in the city of Durham. The tomb of Saint Cuthbert was opened in 1104, when a cathedral was built in his honor, where his relics were to rest. Since then, the manuscript has come a long way, was in the hands of the Jesuits, who gave it to the British Library, which collected a record amount across the country for its purchase. Until the exhibition opens, a fully digitized version of the Cuthbert Gospel can be seen on the Internet today.
