'Angel of Charity': Doris Epple dies at the age of 90

On the last day of summer in St. Petersburg, at the age of ninety, Doris Epple passed away to the Lord God, who was called the angel of Catholic charity in Russia. For a quarter of a century, she has helped the international network of charitable organizations Caritas in the northern capital of Russia, in the south of the country and in Siberia. According to the official website of the Catholic Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow, the funeral mass for Doris Apple was celebrated on September 2 at the St. Anthony the Wonderworker Monastery in St. Petersburg. The service was led by the bishop-nominee Nikolai Dubinin. It was at this holy monastery in 1998 that Doris opened the first charitable dining room for homeless and street children. Most of all, she loved to do various crafts with her own hands. Doris Epple has published seven hand-made manuals, which have undergone a number of reprints and have been distributed around the planet in different languages with a total circulation of more than half a million copies. Having learned from a German newspaper about the horrific life of the homeless in St. Petersburg, she decided to provide one-time help to one of the charity canteens in this city. Since then, her life has changed dramatically. She began to collect help for the poor, attracting her friends and acquaintances to this. The help provided by Mrs. Epple to those in need has become a real salvation for many people who find themselves in difficult life circumstances. Since 1997, when Doris Epple met the director of Caritas St. Petersburg, Father Hartmun Kania, she began to participate in financing charitable projects in many Russian cities: Nizhny Novgorod, Vladimir, Krasnoyarsk, Saratov, Orenburg, Volgograd. In total, over the 25 years devoted to this activity, at the initiative of Doris, 18 such projects have been implemented and 125 million rubles of donations have been collected. In 2012, Doris Epple was awarded the Order of Merit of Baden-Württemberg, which was presented to her by the Minister-President of this federal state. A year earlier, her ministry was marked with an award from the Government of St. Petersburg - the badge of honor 'For Mercy'.
