The Shuya-Smolensk miraculous icon of the Mother of God was painted in 1654-1655 in the Resurrection parish of the city of Shuya, where at that time a pestilence raged without weakening. Trusting in the mercy of God and the intercession of the Mother of God, the parishioners of the Resurrection Church commissioned a pious monk to paint an image of the Smolensk Mother of God, who from ancient times was the savior of the Russian people from enemies and troubles. For a whole week, while the image was being painted, the parishioners were in fasting and prayer. When the icon was painted, the priest of the Resurrection Church and the people took it to the church and placed it in a specially arranged place. Since that time, the plague began to subside, first within the boundaries of the Resurrection parish, and then throughout the city. Many miraculous healings took place from the icon of the Mother of God placed in the church, especially from eye diseases.
