Jerusalem Spikenard Anointing Oil Spikenard anointing oil is made of spikenard stalks and oil blessed in the Temple of the Holy Sepulcher. This ointment is used to anoint the forehead and sore spots in order to achieve emotional and bodily comfort; it may also be used for blessing of the dwelling. In ancient times the spikenard was very expensive and much valued. According to the Scriptures, when Lazarus’ sister Mary used all of her spikenard oil to anoint the feet of Jesus Christ to thank Him for raising her brother from the dead, her action angered some of the onlookers. The label on the spikenard oil bottle features the dome and the cross of the Temple of the Holy Sepulcher, a depiction of Virgin Mary, and also a four-pointed and an eight-pointed Christian crosses.
