Old Believers' Intercession Cathedral in Borovsk will be restored next year

One hundred million rubles were allocated for the restoration of the monument of Russian Old Believer architecture - the Intercession Cathedral in the city of Borovsk, Kaluga Region. As the portal 'Borovskiye Izvestia' clarifies, it is planned to begin work on the restoration of the temple in the third quarter of this year, and to complete them by November next year. The restoration of the ancient temple is timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the Archpriest Avvakum, revered by the Old Believers as a holy martyr, and in secular culture recognized as the most significant writer of the 17th century.

The money for the restoration of the cathedral was allocated according to the order of the President of Russia V.V. Putin after the Old Believer Metropolitan Korniliy (Titov) addressed the head of state. The reconstruction project commissioned by the Posolon Charitable Foundation (head: Vladimir Keturov) has successfully passed the examination; Currently, through the official public procurement portal, a search is underway for a contractor to carry out the work.

The majestic five-domed cathedral in Borovsk with a bell tower in the form of a pillar was built with the money of the merchant N.N. Zhdanov in 1912 in the neo-Russian style. In 1929 the temple was closed; late steel construction use as a garage for equipment. That did not contribute to the preservation of the building: it was dilapidated, cracks began to appear in the foundation of the cathedral. The rescue of the architectural monument began in 2014: the window openings were sewn up, the covering of the domes was renewed, and new crosses were installed on them. By the beginning of this year, the territory adjacent to the temple was ennobled - a new park was completely cleared and laid out.

Mayor of Borovsk A.Ya. Bodrova considers the cathedral to be one of the most beautiful historical buildings in the ancient Russian city: “It is symbolic that the restoration itself will begin in the year of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Archpriest Avvakum, whose stoic fate is tied to our land. The cathedral will become a point of attraction not only for local Old Believers, but also for pilgrims from all over the country. And, of course, this is a great impetus for the prosperity of faith. '
