The first Ukrainian Orthodox Church on the American continent has opened in Canada, in the Greater Toronto region, in the city of Richmond Hill. According to RIA Novosti, in this region it will become the first parish for Russian-speaking believers. Previously, emigrants living here went to church services in the churches of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the road to the nearest of which took about two hours.
The temple of the UOC, opened with the blessing of the Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine, Onufriy, is located in a building built in 1882, which has the status of an architectural monument. It took about ten years to find a suitable place for worship, and then obtain all the necessary permits and approvals.
The first liturgy at the newly formed parish will be celebrated on January 19, 2020, on the Great Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. The first temple of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada is cared for by the clergy of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
