The history of writing the miraculous copy of the Svyatogorsk Icon of the Mother of God, located in the Assumption Cathedral of the Svyatogorsk Lavra, is associated with an Athos elder-icon painter who visited the Holy Mountains soon after the opening of the monastery in 1844. He painted this icon as a gift to the monastery. The image of the Mother of God was for a long time in the Church of St. John the Baptist, in which at that time the Monk John, who carried the feat of the shutter in the chalk rock, was praying. Here the icon was wonderfully preserved not only from dampness, but also from the fire that happened in the cave church.
Subsequently, the icon became famous for its miracles and, at the behest of the Mother of God, was carried out of the caves. The brethren of the Svyatogorsk monastery wore it with prayer singing throughout the surrounding villages until the bloodiest revolutionary years.
In 1922, during a campaign to confiscate church valuables, the Bolsheviks first of all robbed the ancient Svyatogorsk miraculous icon of the Mother of God: the robe on it was one of the most precious in the monastery. After the closure of the monastery, the location of this icon remains unknown.
The miraculous list, made by the Athos icon painter, was kept by the brethren of the monastery in the All Saints cemetery church until it was closed in 1931. In Soviet times, this miraculous list was preserved by pious people.
October 4, 1992, on the feast day of St. Demetrius of Rostov, The Svyatogorsk icon of the Mother of God was solemnly transferred to the Svyatogorsk monastery in a procession of the cross and placed in the Assumption Cathedral. The last segment of the journey was about 32 km away, for more than nine hours the procession was on foot, and the icon was carried by the clergy in their arms.
The Most Holy Lady Theotokos to this day sends Her all-powerful help to all who flow with faith to Her Most Pure Image. Many patients with various ailments received healing after fervent prayer in front of the icon of the Svyatogorsk Mother of God, and sometimes health was sent to the sick after anointing with oil from an icon lamp burning in front of it, or applying dried flowers that adorned the icon to a sore spot.
