On the first day of autumn, the Orthodox Church celebrates the day of memory of the Don Icon of the Mother of God. This image of the Most Pure is traditionally revered as the guardian of the southern borders of Holy Russia. In 1380, on the eve of the feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Don Cossacks handed this icon over to the Grand Duke of Moscow Dimitri Donskoy. On the day of the Battle of Kulikovo, which was decisive for the Russian statehood, the icon was among the Orthodox army - and after the victory it was solemnly transferred to Moscow. Here the image became famous for many miracles given by the Queen of Heaven through prayers in front of him - and stayed first in the Assumption, and then with the Annunciation Cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin. In memory of the victory over the Mongol-Tatars, won on the banks of the Don River, the icon began to be called Donskoy. In 1591, the Crimean prince Nuradin, together with his brother, Khan Murat-Giray and numerous horsemen, invaded the Russian kingdom. Having approached Moscow, the horde settled on the Sparrow Hills, preparing for the decisive throw. Muscovites walked around the city with a procession of the cross, making a prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ and His Most Pure Mother, carrying Her Don image in front of the procession. On the day of the battle, the icon, like two centuries ago, was among the Russian troops - and again the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary helped the Russian troops to win. And on the place where during the battle the camp church was located, in which the miraculous icon stayed, then the Moscow Donskoy Monastery was founded. It is in this holy monastery, according to a time-honored tradition, that the Primate of the Russian Church performs the rite of brewing the holy world every four years. The original of the icon of the Mother of God 'Donskaya' is in our time in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Once a year the holy image is solemnly transferred to the Donskoy Monastery, where a solemn service is performed in front of it.
