The tradition of lighting candles for yourself and loved ones in Jerusalem.
In Christianity a lit candle is a symbol of the spiritual wellbeing that helps us to overcome our daily trials. This lighting of candles is part of the spiritual world that we have inherited. It demonstrates that we follow the most important tradition of Christianity: respect for those close to us, for our loved ones and for the memory of those who are no longer with us. There are many temples and sanctuaries in the world. Among them, the Temple of the Holy Sepulchre is located in the place where Jesus Christ died and where he rose again, the most important place for any Christian. Everyone recognizes that this place has extraordinary power. It is no surprise that everyone wants to journey to the Holy Land to light a candle in the one place that receives more petitions than anywhere else in the world. Many people will never have the chance to personally go to Jerusalem to light a candle. That can be due to various factors: economic, health-related, or simply a lack of time. This inability is particularly difficult for a believer. A person travelling to the Holy Land has always received requests from family members to place a candle for their health once they reach the Temple of Jerusalem. The traveler would then be impatient to return and confirm that the candle had indeed been placed in the Temple. For the faithful, this message was the best gift that could be received, a sign of the highest respect.
Locations for placing candles in the Temple of the Holy Sepulchre
We have created an exceptional virtual tour of the sanctuary so that you can visit the Temple of the Holy Sepulchre from the inside and choose where you want your candle placed. Thanks to this unique method of displaying the images on your screen you will feel like you really are in the Holy Land. Even though you are thousands of kilometers from Israel, you can’t help but feel the “presence” and reverence
On the home screen for the virtual visit to Golgotha you can see a chest (to the left of the altarpiece) for the donations and another chest with the candles where they can be taken and lit to fulfil your order. This part of the virtual visit allows you to see the location in greater detail.
